The Importance of a Good Dental Routine

BY Riverheart family dentistry

A routine is a consistent set of activities that you commit to doing again and again to help you achieve certain goals. Having a routine in place can help you do certain things, or refrain from certain things, by keeping the end in mind. Many people use a meal plan as a routine to keep them on a healthy diet; some use an exercise routine to keep them accountable for reaching their ideal weight. Whatever your goal, a routine can help you achieve it faster if it is consistently put into practice. Routines do not have to be complicated to be beneficial, they simply need to be carried out.

One area that many people overlook for the importance of having a routine set in practice is the area of oral health. Cavities, gingivitis, tooth decay, periodontal disease, staining of the teeth, and tooth loss do not happen over night. They are the result of inconsistent oral health care, and they can all be prevented. The importance of a good dental routine protects the smile and complete mouth and prevents severe compromises to your oral health.

Inside the mouth are millions of bacteria that thrive in the warm and moist environment that surrounds them. By introducing sugars and food particles into the mouth every time you eat a meal, indulge in a beverage other than water, or sneak in a snack, you are feeding the oral bacteria and allowing them to grow in even greater number. Having a good dental routine in place and putting it into consistent practice is essential for warding off damage to your smile.

Flossing and brushing are vital to your oral health. While most people brush their teeth regularly (hopefully twice a day, at least), many people neglect flossing. Flossing is actually more important than brushing because floss is designed to reach areas that a toothbrush cannot. The tight spaces between the teeth trap bacteria and food particles, and toothbrush bristles cannot clean out these areas. Floss removes and loosens plaque at the gum line and between the teeth, and a toothbrush should be used to brush these loosened particles away. By only brushing your teeth, you are only removing half of the bacteria-laden plaque from your mouth. Rinsing your toothbrush well after each use, replacing it every three to six months, and keeping regular dental appointments are also vital to promoting optimal oral health. By implementing these simple habits into a regular routine, you can protect your smile for years to come.
